Formerly a telephone exchange, the building was originally converted into flats in 2001. These high-end apartments were designed to provide exceptional living space. They were refurbished to an immaculate and luxurious finish, to create London based Manhattan Style Loft living.
By the time the new owners took over the flat, it still retained much of the original character but had been overwhelmed by family living and was due for refurbishment.
Working in an iconic building means that every time we touch a surface or change a space, we have to do so thoughtfully and sympathetically.
We take great care to stay true to the original character of the buildings within which we work. We dedicate a significant amount of effort ensuring that whatever we add or change enhances the design intent and lifts the character.
We were looking to add some much needed square footage while working within a complex structural system and well-devised (therefore not easily modified) layout. The mezzanine area was seen as an opportunity to expand a very small space into a more generous and usable study. The existing access was a ladder-stair with non-compliant handrails. This little space was an opportunity to create a feature stair plus add hidden storage.
It is a rewarding process to work with engaged and interesting clients. The home owners of this flat have given back to this flat a sense of glamour and elevated style while preserving the welcoming character of loft style living that Philippe Starck set out to achieve.
